We are proud to announce, in cooperation with Zacuto, the release of episode 2 of the Great Camera Shootout.
About the Series
In Part One of Revenge of the Great Camera Shootout 2012 you were presented with unlabeled footage of a complex party scene designed by Bruce Logan ASC, the test administrator. You’ve also been privy to the camera line-up and the experts operating them. Many came into Part One with preconceived notions of this Shootout. For many, we exceeded expectations; in many cases challenging viewers to rethink their understanding of camera technology and how it relates to filmmaking–and how all of that relates to talent, creativity, collaboration and experience. Others were more interested in getting straight to the camera footage, selecting their favorites and waiting until now for the truth to be unveiled. Hope you’ve written down your favorite camera picks A-I.
As you’ll see in the audience reactions and discussions, the results are subjective and everyone has their own personal opinion on which piece of footage looks best. While some are delightfully surprised at the image quality of one camera over another, others were upset with the overall acceptance of the consumer cameras.
Each DP interpreted the camera shot depending on their own taste, personal style and experience, not necessarily by the specs of their camera but to make it look pleasing to them. Creativity trumps technical and everyone will have their own vision and interpretation of how a subject should be filmed.
The cameras you chose may surprise you, but don’t think of this as an end-all indication of which camera you should shoot your next project with. Think of it as an education in what options are available. As many have said not every camera is right for every job.
Not only do the DPs share their motivations on how they lit their shot, they share their film influences, how they’ve learned from their mistakes in the face of failure, and what creativity means to them.
Part Two proves that beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. Have you made your choices yet? Prepare yourself- you might be surprised with the cameras you chose!
